Have you ever thought that what Carnarvon needs is a competitive advantage over other growers around Australia to market their produce? Well, with the perfect climate, growing seasons and water efficiencies that we have and utilise in Carnarvon, we do have a competitive advantage, and we should be marketing this to our benefit.
The Gascoyne Food Plan is an initiative of the Carnarvon Growers Association, with funding provided by Royalties for Regions, aiming to shift the focus of Carnarvon produce from production to marketing. The Gascoyne Food Plan focuses on bringing together primary industry groups and the Gascoyne community to achieve recognition of our region’s products and receive premium prices for these products. Representatives from the horticulture, fishing and pastoral industries of the region have come together to formulate the Gascoyne Food Council.
The major focal points of the Food Plan are:
- Production and development – looking at quality and consistency of product coming from Carnarvon. Working with the Department of Agriculture to develop Best Practice Manuals for growers in Carnarvon, utilising existing resources such as Good Vegetables Guide, and complete benchmarking exercises on current crop yields in the region.
- Development of a Carnarvon Market Information Service – this service will be a user friendly tool for growers on what Carnarvon produces, what is required by the markets and when they need it.
- Supply chain networks – this is about building a database of contacts in the supply chain and then utilising them to our best advantage. By promoting our product and availability of produce we are enabling consumers outside of the Perth Markets an opportunity to purchase our product direct from the region.
- Regional marketing – we currently have many amazing opportunities and events within the region to showcase our produce, be it through the Taste of the Gascoyne, Growers Markets or Food Trail. The Food Council is looking at a coordinated effort to link all these events together, build on opportunities and brand them under the one image to get our message across.
