Chefs and foodies band together to support the Gascoyne

More than 200 passionate Western Australian foodies came together in Perth on Sunday 19 April 2015 to raise funds for farmers and growers in the state’s food bowl who are recovering from the devastation caused by Cyclone Olwyn last month.

Held at Perth’s Urban Orchard, Chefs for the Gascoyne, brought together 20 chefs and more than 40 suppliers resulting in a gourmet extravaganza and a true celebration of community spirit.

The event was officially opened by the Minister for Agriculture and Food; Fisheries, the Hon. Ken Baston MLC and was hosted by media personalities Verity James and Josh Byrne.

Member of the organising committee and WA Food Ambassador Don Hancey said he was delighted with the way the day went.

“Everyone had a great time. We were very lucky with the support we received from the producers all over Western Australia and from chefs in Perth – it made the day really special. More than 90% of produce we used yesterday was donated, and all of our chefs gave up their time to attend.”

The event raised more than $25,000 which will be given to the Gascoyne Food Council to assist with the promotion of Carnarvon product in the future.

Fred Fairthorne of Farmer Jack’s supermarkets also used the opportunity to present Gascoyne Food Council Chairperson Paul Shain and Vice-Chairperson Michael Nixon with a $100,000 donation.

Gascoyne Food Council Executive Officer Alex Maslen said the growers have been overwhelmed by the support shown to them by the Perth community.

“Cyclone Olwyn caused more than $10 million worth of damage to growing infrastructure and tens of millions in crop losses overnight,” said Alex.

“Our 194 growers are very resilient and will do their best to get their winter crops down to Perth as soon as possible. It certainly helps them to know that people in the city are aware of their struggle and care about helping the region recover. Keep an eye out for Carnarvon product in June!”

2015 Growers’ Market

Sunday, October 12th, 2014

The 2015 Gascoyne Growers Market season will start on the Saturday the 16th of May.  Check out the new and familiar faces that will be stallholders for this year’s markets here.  Please be aware due to the late start in the season post Cyclone Olwyn some fresh produce may not be available until June.

Thank you to everyone for making the 2014 season so enjoyable.  The markets went out with a bang, with live music and tastings by our local cooking extraordinaire Paul Kelly – we should have got him on the mike to see if he can sing as well as he cooks!

The season would not have been possible without funding support from Landcorp, who contributed significantly to the running of the Gascoyne Growers Markets.  Also our tireless co-ordinator/coffee tart Melanie Foxley.

To register your interest for the 2015 season please contact Mel on 0419 726 066 or email markets@gascoynefood.com.au.

Gascoyne Food Festival 2014

Thursday, September 4th, 2014

The freshest produce, the best chefs, a tropical plantation setting and a long table set for 180 people was the yearly highlight of the Gascoyne Food Festival held in Carnarvon from the 14th to the 16th August. The Long Table Lunch was hailed another success by all who were lucky enough to get hold of tickets for this annual gourmet extravaganza.

WA’s Food Ambassador Don Hancey and his team from Pan-O-rama Catering lead the charge again this year along with other leading Perth restaurateurs including Peter Manifis from Incontro, Shane Watson from Print Hall, Scott Bridger from Bib and Tucker, Nick Donlin from Beaumonde Catering and Michelle Forbes from The Trustee Bar and Bistro.

Utilising local fresh fruit and vegetables from local grower groups Loveapple and Sweeter Banana, prawns from Norwest Seafood, fish from Pickles Point Seafood, crabs from Abacus crab, beef from Lyndon Station and the freshest herbs from Morels the chefs challenge was to each provide a signature dish.

The Long Table Lunch event was held at Bentwaters Plantation and along with a purpose-built outdoor kitchen under the shade of magnificent old Poinciana trees, surrounded by mangos and grapefruit, made for an idyllic setting. As guests arrived they were greeted by the flurry of white aprons and the exotic smells of a myriad of aromas which made up the 10 signature dishes designed to showcase the Gascoyne’s sensational array of fresh food and produce. The Gascoyne’s very own WA Signature Dish finalist, Paul Kelly, kicked off the day with his Abacas Crab tartlet.

The Gascoyne Food Festival spans three days and includes a Chef’s paddock tour, the inaugural BBQ on the Beach, Long Table Lunch and tastings at the Gascoyne Growers Markets. The events celebrate the coming together of the restaurant industry with local growers and the supply chain whilst creating brand awareness for the region’s produce.

Executive Chef of The Trustee Bar and Bistro said “It’s such a great experience to get out of the kitchen and meet the producers behind all the amazing WA produce. It really puts in to perspective the amount of sacrifice and passion that goes with a farming lifestyle.  It was also a highlight working alongside amazing chefs that are now great mates.”
